Am I wrong About The Avon Walk For Breast Cancer?
February 4th, 2008 | by askadmin | As a cancer survivor, I am usually an enthusiastic supporter for most programs designed to raise money for cancer research, treatment, services, or just about anything related to cancer.
A friend of mine, a breast cancer survivor, sent me an email telling me she was thinking about walking in the “Avon Walk For Breast Cancer” event. I encouraged her to do so.
Several days later she sent me another email telling me she was not going to be able to walk in this event. She was extremely disappointed about not being able to walk in this event. The reason she will not be able to participate is the $65 registration fee. Personally I think a mandatory $65 registration fee is just plain WRONG!
If a person, especially a cancer survivor, is going to make the commitment to participate in this walk, and help raise money, why should they have to pay to do that? For many people, including my friend, the $65 registration fee is just not affordable. I could understand a $5 or $10 fee but $65 is excessive. Am I wrong about this?
In my opinion, it gets worse. I was going to help her with the registration fee until she told me the rest. The goal for each walker is to raise, $1,800. Guess what? If they can’t raise the $1,800 prior to the walk, they are expected to pay the difference with their own credit card or they can’t participate as a walker. I think that is outrageous! This organization should be grateful for any one willing to walk even if they can’t afford the $65 registration fee. They should also be grateful for every donation the walker raises even if it is less than $1,800.
I went to the official of the “Avon Walk For Breast Cancer” site and read the following paragraph in their Frequently Asked Questions section that I don’t agree with either.
If I can’t walk, can my donors get their money back?
All donations are non-refundable.
I am not saying that the “Avon Walk For Breast Cancer” is a scam. I’m just saying their policies give that impression. Am I wrong about this?

I enjoyed visiting your site. I could not believe what I read about the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. You are not wrong in my opinion. It seems ridiculous to have to pay $65.00 to participate and especially for someone who is a breast cancer survivor. But reading further, I, too, feel outraged to think that if they don’t raise the amount of $1,800 that they must pay the difference. That’s a penalty and why would anyone enter. I’m not sure that I will be buying any more products from Avon.

I thought I was the only one who thought there was something fishy about the rules for the Breast cancer walk. My daughter who is 26yrs old had both her breasts removed. She heard about the walk and was so excited to help. She wanted me to do the walk with her and I agreed. I was going to pay her and my registration fee of $90 and give it to her for her upcoming birthday. When I went on line, what I saw, really sickened me.A commitment of $2200 per person? Taking what was not fulfilled of the commitment out of my credit card? If you don’t have the money then you should not participate in the event? I wonder how much of the money actually goes to the charity. They have a team of PR people to get you motivated. They have a online store to buy gear for the walk….I do not feel comfortable about this. I can’t afford $4400 for her and I to walk. I am going to report this to the State Attorney General’s Office..
